My experience with Hello There Photography was fantastic. Despite my usual discomfort in front of the camera, my photographer made the process stress-free with clear posing instructions and a relaxed atmosphere. The resulting business headshots exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Hello There Photography.

Anastassia Ferdman

Being a photo and videographer myself, I was not easy to please. Hello There Photography did an amazing job not just with the photos, but making the whole photo session very comfortable. My fiancée is very hard to pose(first hand experience) and they were able to give her very clear yet simple instructions to follow.

HOLLIM LEI

This photography team were nothing short of amazing. They were so thoughtful and had so many extra tidbits of attention to detail. They helped with poses and catching natural moments. My wife who's quite self conscious about having her picture taken was put at ease with their light, fun personalities. I love the epic lighting that Hello There Photography uses. Really happy with our results.

JONATHAN CHUNG

We had an amazing photoshoot experience with Hello There Photography. It is not easy to get our little dog Louie to pose for the camera but our photographers chose a beautiful, comfortable location and just knew how to get Louie's attention. Our dog looked like a professional poser by the end of the shoot :) The photos turned out so beautiful! When you work with a photographer you trust, you get wonderful results! Hello There Photography is one of the best photographers we have worked with.

Petrina D'Souza

We’ve had our family photos, maternity photos and newborn photos taken with Hello There Photography. He’s organized and client-friendly. He makes our whole experience fun and enjoyable every time. The photos always turn out so beautiful and perfect. I’ve recommended him to my friends and they’ve all had nothing but great things to say about him and the photographs. You really get professional and quality service at a reasonable price. We’re definitely sticking with him for our future photo shoots!

TRACY TSE

Hello There Photography took gorgeous portraits at a recent wedding we attended, some of which we use for prints at home today. They take the time to compose each subject carefully, with lots of positivity, which is amazing considering how many people there were!

He has also been super accommodating with our own wedding arrangement with him, after our plans changed several times. Easily the most courteous vendor we have! Thank you :)

Core Plan

neutral C,B

Family photos are an important way to capture life's milestones with those we care about most. Dressing thoughtfully for these occasions can make our portraits truly stand out. Whether arranging the perfect shot for a festive card or creating an artful placement on our living room wall, we need to think about our choice of clothes to make sure the entire family looks their best.
In Vancouver, we're lucky to have access to stunning natural backdrops for photography, whether in a cozy indoor setting or the great outdoors. Our vibrant city offers incredible spots for you and your photographer, but its famously wet weather means we might need to be flexible with our plans. Regardless of the location, it's the preparation that makes our whole family pictures turn into timeless keepsakes.

Key Takeaways

Comfortable clothing enhances photo sessions.

Solid colours and simple patterns work well.

Consider the weather and location when planning.

Bring more than one outfit to wear for family photos.

COMFORTABLE CLOTHING

When getting ready for a family session, it's essential to select clothing that is comfortable to wear for your family. First and foremost, we should make sure our outfits are well-fitting. This means steering clear of clothes that are either too tight or too baggy. Garments that fit perfectly help us appear and feel our best, allowing our authentic selves to shine through in the photos.
For those looking for a more polished look, opting for subtle shapewear like Spanx is an effective choice. These can discreetly boost our confidence while still being comfortable, providing a more streamlined appearance.
It's also a good idea to stick with clothes we are already familiar with. Wearing brand-new outfits can sometimes feel restrictive or may not fit as anticipated, which can lead to discomfort. Choosing clothing we know well ensures we are aware of how they fit and feel, preventing any unexpected issues on the day of the shoot.
Layering is another useful strategy. Our wardrobe can include items like jackets, cardigans, or scarves to add depth to our look. With layers, we can easily change our appearance by adding or removing pieces. This approach offers variety without the need for complete outfit changes. Bringing a coat also provides a great option for layering in early Spring and late Fall when the weather is not warm enough to allow a t-shirt.
Let’s consider skirts and dresses for this purpose. A flowing maxi dress or a floral romper are both fashionable and comfortable. It allows freedom of movement and can be paired with a denim jacket or light scarf for added flair in the spring and summer.

Here are some tips to remember:

Fit: Choose clothes that hug your body comfortably.

Familiarity: Wear something you've tried before.

Layering: Use items like sweaters or accessories to switch up your appearance.

Support: Consider supportive undergarments if desired.

By focusing on comfort, we arrive at our photoshoot ready to express genuine smiles and capture authentic moments. Feeling good in what we wear enhances our natural confidence, leading to photos that truly reflect our family's essence.

SOLID COLOURS & PATTERNS

When choosing outfits for family photos, going with neutral colours can create a timeless look. We find that tones like white, beige, and gray work well. These colours offer a classic charm that doesn't fade with changing trends. They let the focus stay on us as individuals, making the photos more about our family rather than what we're wearing. It's important for us to use colours that complement each other without having to wear the exact same shades.
In addition to neutrals, patterns add a fun twist to our outfits. Patterns like plaids and florals offer some personality and variation to our photos. When considering patterns, it's smart to look at their size and detail. Bigger patterns often stand out better in pictures. Mixing patterns with solid colours or denim can enhance the appearance, giving more depth and texture while keeping everything looking put together.
Here’s a quick list of ideas:

Neutral colours

White

Beige

Gray

Patterns

Plaids

Stripes

Florals

For a harmonious look, we should balance coordinated colours with our personal tastes. Everyone in the family needs to feel comfortable and at ease in their outfits. This way, our photos reflect our true selves and remain appealing over the years. A thoughtful selection of colours and patterns ensures our family photos will be both stylish and memorable, showing our unique family spirit.

WHAT TO AVOID WEARING

When preparing for family photos, it's important to make thoughtful clothing choices so that everyone looks their best. Say no to brand logos or print graphics—they draw attention away from the family and onto the clothing itself. Similarly, hats can be problematic. While stylish, they can cast unwanted shadows and leave lines on the forehead if removed. We will always suggest not wearing shorts as they don't look best for your family photo session.
Avoiding visible undergarments is key. Don't forget stray bra straps or underpants can ruin the polished look. Opt for well-fitting clothing that remains neat and discreet. This ensures that the focus stays on the family, rather than on clothing distractions.

We also recommend steering clear of certain casual or loose items like cargo pants, vests, sandals, or oversized garments. These can give off an informal or neglected vibe, which might not match the tone you’re aiming for. Instead, choose clothing that is well-fitted and structured. This not only looks more polished but also enhances the overall look of the photographs.
Emphasizing these choices will help keep the attention where it should be—on the smiling faces of your family, capturing memories beautifully.

Additional Suggestions

Footwear: Since we might ask you to be barefoot during the photoshoot, consider wearing shoes that are simple to slip on and off. Comfort and ease are key. Dress shoes are more appropriate for formal look in a ceremonial environment
Accessories: Watches can be distracting in photos, so it's best to remove them. Phones should also be kept out of sight, preferably in a bag.
Transition Glasses: For those who wear transition lenses, starting the session without them can help prevent any unwanted tint, ensuring that all shots have clear optics.
Ground Cover: Bringing along a fabric picnic blanket is thoughtful, especially if you prefer not to sit directly on the grass or if the ground is damp.
Personal Grooming: Close-up shots may be part of the session, so make sure that fingernails are tidy. Trimming nose hairs can also make a difference in detailed images.

Slimming Tips:

Colours: Darks can make you look slimmer.

Patterns: Vertical stripes work best for a slimming effect.

Styles: Consider wearing v-neck designs for a flattering look.

Avoid logos on all clothing items.
